SD57 meeting for first time this school year

The Prince George School Board has a pair of big items on the agenda for tonight’s meeting, the first of the school year.

Trustees are expected to pass the final version of this year’s budget, and approve the 2016/17 capital plan summary. The capital plan includes applications to the Provincial Government for funding for large projects.

At the top of the wish list again this year, is a $42.6M replacement of Kelly Road Secondary, something that has been included in capital plans since 2012.

Right beneath that, is a $7.2M expansion of DP Todd Secondary to increase capacity from 625 to 750. The District has been asking the province for funding on that since 2008.

Notably, this year SD57 is asking for $375,000 to remove lead from the drinking water in four elementary schools; Edgewood, Foothills, Nukko Lake and Pineview. A total of seven facilities tested positive.

The Board will also discuss creating an aboriginal education committee, something the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council spent much of last year calling for. The proposed committee would act on an advisory capacity to the SD57 Board, and “will act in the best interest of all aboriginal students.”

The meeting starts at 7pm at the Board Offices on Ferry Ave.
