Operation ‘Hang Up’ issuing tickets in Prince George

The Prince George RCMP was out along Ospika Boulevard this morning looking for people using their phone while they drive.

Melissa Lang, volunteer with Citizens on Patrol, was a part of that team.

“We have our leave the phone alone signs set up, to provide that visual education, and we are here to see if we observe anyone texting or talking while driving and members are set up down the road.”

The volunteers were armed with radios, communicating the uniformed officers discreetly.

One of those officer, Constable Patrick Kennedy says despite all the recent public outreach, people are not getting the message.

“People are still using their cell phones even though the message is out there, even though the legislature has increased the fines and the points penalties – people are still driving and texting.”

After factoring in the ICBC points premium, a first time distracted driving ticket will cost you $543.
