Hunter attacked by grizzly near Smithers

A grizzly bear involved in an attack Saturday near Morin Lake, northeast of Smithers, has been found dead, according Conservation Officer Cam Schley.

“We just got back out of the area from where the attack happened and we were able to locate the grizzly bear and it’s dead. We estimate it’s probably a 800 pound grizzly bear,” says Schley.

The man was taken to hospital for injuries to his hand and arm. During the attack, he was able to fire off a few shots that hit the bear.

“He stepped over a log and came face to face with a grizzly bear. The bear stopped attacking him and he was able to get a few shots off at the bear,” says Schley.

The Conservation Officer says the encounter and attack was bad luck, and the hunter did nothing wrong. Schley does admit the hunter was lucky considering the circumstances.

COs have since lifted any precautionary advisories in the area.
