Travelling a major expense for local MPs, report shows

The federal government released MPs expenses from this fiscal year’s first quarter (April 1st – June 30th) this morning.

The report shows all the money MPs spent on things like employee salaries, advertising, offices, and travel.

Like many long-distance MPs, Cariboo – Prince George MP Todd Doherty had an expensive bill. He spent $113,833.89 in three months, $48,686.34 of which went towards travel expenses. He says deciding between the two places can be a balancing act.

Doherty says deciding between the two places can be a balancing act.

“Do you travel back on the weekend when there are events or do you stay in Ottawa? For me, it’s more important to be back in the riding following up on what we campaigned about: being visible and present. The important part of the work is done here in the riding.”

A part of his travel costs includes $12,364.37 for “Designated traveller” and another $1,667.52 for “Dependents.” Doherty’s wife flies with him to Ottawa when she can.

“Western MPs also have the highest rate of divorce. It’s something that you think of before you even put your name forward,” he says, “I’m not working on another marriage and it’s important that I have my spouse be part of this experience as much as she can (and) it’s important that my family experiences this as well.”

In a similar situation, Prince George—Peace River— Northern Rockies MP Todd Zimmer spent $110,490.26, and $38,861.94 on travel.

Doherty’s annual budget is $415,808, and Zimmer’s is $424,460.
