Former NHL star Theo Fleury talks trauma and healing in Prince George

Day 2 of the “Healing Through Learning” Trauma conference saw a former NHL star walk through the Prince George Civic Centre.

Theo Fleury talked about his journey towards healing plus his highs and lows during his professional hockey career.

From being molested at a young age to a $3500 per week cocaine habit, Fleury explains how he reached his breaking point.

“I just got to the point in my life where I was completely exhausted from living in emotional pain and suffering and the path I was heading down, I was eventually going to die at some point plus I didn’t want it to happen. I reached out for help and finally started the process.”

Fleury does over 80 trauma-related speaking engagements per year and is amazed by one thing from the people he’s met.

“The thing I am in awe of the most is people’s courage because that’s what it takes to tell your story. I told my story and I started getting all of these me too’s, so that’s what has made it all worth it reaching people on this spiritual level and feel safe enough they can come to me.”

According to Fleury, he has been sober since September 18th, 2005 and was molested over 100 times in a 2.5-year span by disgraced former junior coach Graham James while he was with the Winnipeg/Moose Jaw Warriors.
