Smoke Eaters lift past Spruce Kings with three goal third period

The end to Friday’s game against the Trail Smoke Eaters did not resemble the start for the Prince George Spruce Kings.

Prince George fell 5-4 during the first game of a three game trip.

Jarod Hovde and Ethan De Jong opened the scoring for the Spruce Kings jumping out to a 2-0 lead.

Ryan Moon cut the deficit in half before the end of the frame making it 2-1 after 20 minutes.

The Spruce Kings would extended their lead in the second thanks to goals from Brett Mennear and Chong Lee.

Ross Armour kept Trail within reach keeping it close at 4-2 heading into the third period.

Prince George’s third period meltdown included three unanswered goals from the Smoke Eaters coming off the sticks of Blaine Caton, Luke Santerno, and Mitchell Barker.

It was a less than stellar outing for Spruce Kings goalie Tavin Grant who recorded 29 saves on 34 shots.

The Penticton Vees welcome the Spruce Kings on Saturday before completing their trip on Sunday against West Kelowna.
