A slow first half turned out to be the big difference for the UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team on Friday against the Winnipeg Wesmen losing 58-52.
The home-side jumped out to a 26-19 half-time lead before things picked up for UNBC in the second half.
Despite outscoring the Wesmen 33-22 in the final 20 minutes a less than stellar 14 for 21 performance on the free-throw line would come back to haunt them.
Maria Mongomo netted a double-double in the season opener posting 11 points to go along with 15 rebounds including 12 defensive rebounds.
Madison Landry led the T-Wolves in points playing just her first Canada West game netting 15 points.
Megan Nooney was the leading scorer for Winnipeg with 14 points.
On the men’s side, UNBC fell 74-59 against the Wesmen
Marcus MacKay led the Timberwolves in points with 22 while Denzel Lynch-Blair potted 25 for Winnipeg in the victory.
UNBC went a chilly 22 for 68 on field goals.
Both universities play the second game of their double-headers on Saturday.
