Cheona Edzerza awarded for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport

A Prince George athlete was recently presented with the 2016 Premier’s Award for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport.

Cheona Edzerza was one of eight First Nations athletes in the Northeast to be recognized with the award.

The 22-year-old UNBC striker says the announcement was unexpected.

“I didn’t even know I was going to be nominated and that was a surprise as well. It’s always good to be recognized for some of your achievements.”

The award is organised by the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council and the Province of British Columbia. The award recognizes athletes under 25 years old who have achieved “excellence in performance sport, are regarded for their leadership qualities, committed to higher education, and recognized as a community role models both on and off the field of play.” The nomination process began in September, and over 130 names were submitted.

Edzerza believes working with his father got him recognized.

“A few years back I ran several camps with my dad on some local reserves all around BC and I think that was a huge part of what got me the award.”

As far as his leadership qualities go, Edzerza admits he doesn’t seem himself in that light.

“I don’t see myself as a leader but some of the things that I’ve done and how some people may have looked up to me I can definitely see how they would see me a leader.”

In total, 47 British Columbian First Nations athletes from 6 regions will receive the award.

Edzerza is now eligible for one of six Provincial male awards.
