Despite hearing reports of overcrowded classrooms in the Lower Mainland, the amount of kids enrolled in BC’s public elementary and secondary schools has actually gone down.
There were 579,000 students enrolled in BC public schools during the 2010-11 academic year but by 2014-15, that figure declined to 552,786.
While the provincial downward trend is concerning, Julie Lavigne with Stats Canada says making comparisons between provinces can be problematic.
“The number of students in Canada’s public elementary and secondary schools has remained consistent in recent years but any comparisons between the provinces and territories must be considered with caution because reporting varies by province and territory.”
Just over 5 million students in Canada were enrolled in the country’s public elementary and secondary school’s in 2014-15.
