Gordon enjoys homecoming with Spartans

The women’s basketball double header between the Trinity Western Spartans and UNBC Timberwolves featured some local flavour.

Prince George product and Cedars Christian graduate Kayla Gordon made her return to the Northern Sports Centre.

During Friday’s 68-61 win over UNBC Gordon collected 17 points and 7 rebounds and led the Spartans in points with 20 after Saturday’s thrilling 82-81 defeat at the hands of the T-Wolves.

Trinity Western is 4-2 to start the 2016-17 Canada West season.

Gordon believes the balance of this year’s squad will make them a very formidable opponent. “We have equal scoring among a lot of our team and it’s not just one person which allows us to move the ball well and work together.”

The former high-school basketball star believes with the conference realignment over the summer it made the trip up north all the more exciting.

“With UNBC now in the same division as us, it was really exciting for me to come back and play at home in front of a little bit of a home crowd and this facility is great as I train here in the summer so it was good to be back.”

Both games also put her against her former Cedars Christian team mate Hannah Pudlas who recently returned to the UNBC line-up after a bout with mono in September.

Gordon adds it was nice to re-fuel the friendly rivalry with Pudlas.

“It’s always fun to see her out and do really well plus it’s really encouraging for another play from my high school come out and play at the CIS level, it’s a good healthy rivalry but at the same time we’re also cheering each other on.”

Gordon is logging 32 minutes per game with Trinity Western and is averaging 14 points per game.
