2017 Fan The Flame Award nominees announced

The Fan The Flame Awards recognize athletes from all across Northern BC.

For the upcoming 2017 banquet and gala, there are 33 nominations that come from eight different communities, including Prince George, Quesnel, Terrace, and Fort St. James.

“To see that the communities are recognizing those athletes and really demonstrating the appreciation for the effort and contribution that it takes to be able to compete at a high level is really very gratifying,” says Executive Director of Engage Sport North Leslie Wirth.

She says the sport development program is pleased to see the athletic excellence spread across the region and the candidates are deserving of the nod.

“They represent Northern British Columbia. We have athletes who’ve been identified that had tremendous growth years last year. So what we’re looking to do is to actually celebrate the effort and the achievement in sport.”

The individuals and teams being recognized this year are coming from a variety of sports and Wirth believes the impact on their communities stretches far beyond the local trophy case.

“To see the level of understanding from the community that what these athletes, coaches, and officials are actually doing, does have an impact locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally.”

CBC Olympic Host and sportscaster Scott Russell is set to deliver the keynote address at the event on February 9th.
