Holmes becomes first winner of the Matt Pearce Award

A UNBC women’s basketball player from Prince George is the first recipient of the Matt Pearce Award.

Emily Holmes took the honour and says the award hit home on a personal level.

“My relationship with Matt began in the gym where he was a ref, coaching or just helping out, that’s where I usually was and seeing that my family and their’s were such good friends it obviously bright us together and I got to know him fairly well.”

“I opened up the letter and read that I received it I was literally brought to tears. I think about the day he passed and the impact it had on myself and my family, being the first recipient of this award is a really good feeling.”

The new award was established after his passing last January.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be given each year and Elliott Rowe of the Timberwolves men’s basketball team is the first male recipient.

Pearce was inducted into the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 after playing seven seasons for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, where he won a Grey Cup in 1990.
