Ministry of Environment places Prince George under air quality advisory

An air quality advisory has been issued for Prince George due to high concentrations of particulates in our air.

“Whenever there’s an air quality advisory, people should know that, if you have any underlying medical conditions or you’re planning any strenuous exercise, you may want to wait until after the advisory is lifted,” says Northern Health’s Andrea Palmer. “If you are experiencing symptoms like eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing, stay indoors. Air conditioned spaces can help to reduce fine particulate exposure. This is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and people who have diabetes, lung and heart disease.”

Recreational fires, street sweeping and the use of wood-burning appliances are banned in the city until the advisory ends. There is an exception for households that only use wood burning appliances to heat their homes.

Local industry is also being asked to reduce emissions wherever possible during the air quality advisory.

You can find more information about current air quality here. For more information on the City’s Clean Air Bylaw, you can visit their website.
