Summer a dry time for food back donations

Food banks in Prince George continue to see a rise in clients, but not a rise in donations.

In the summer donations tend to slow down as many people are away, but the food banks are in constant need of donations.

Bernie Goold with the St. Vincent de Paul Society says right now they’re looking for fresh produce to go in their food hampers.

“One of the greatest needs is probably if anyone has started to harvest their garden, if they’re fresh vegetables, it’s a tremendous bonus to put into our fruit and vegetable hampers each week,” she says.

Goold says they’re also looking for things like oats, sugar, rice, and canned tomatoes that they can use for the meals they provide every day.

As well, they’re always looking for volunteers over the summer, and anyone interested can contact the society.

She says the St. Vincent de Paul Society provides up to 290 meals per day, and over 500 fruit and vegetable hampers per month, on top of 150 regular food hampers.
