Marla Mallett’s rink, which includes lead Blaine de Jager of Prince George, won the Provincial women’s curling championship in Duncan defeating Diane Gushulak of Royal City 6-3 in the final.
Mallett, who is from Walnut Grove, advances to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in St Catharines, Ontario, from February 18-26.
Other members of the team coached by Gerry Richard are third Shannon Aleksic of Abbotsford and second Brett Richard of Kelowna.
Below is a report from Curl BC
Duncan, BC (January 23, 2017)
The last time Marla Mallett won a BC Scotties title was in 2009 – with Diane Gushulak by her side, playing second on her team.
In 2017, it has been a different story. Gushulak has been by her side, but in a different role – as skip of the final team she had to beat to win the competition.
The final game was a close affair but Mallett, who also won the BC title in 1995 and 1997, proved she was the top team. A deuce in the ninth end helped the Walnut Grove skip on the way to a 6-3 win over Gushulak.
“We prepared. We followed our processes and we were successful. I’m very proud of the team,” said Mallett.
Mallett, a Canadian junior champion (1988), was joined by third Shannon Aleksic, from Abbotsford, who also has national experience. She traveled to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts as part of Team Saskatchewan (1999) and Team BC (2007).
Sisters Brette Richards (Kelowna) and Blaine DeJager (Prince George) round out the team. They have also been to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Blaine was part of Team Alberta in 2014 and Brette traveled to the Scotties in 2009 as part of Team Manitoba.
