New Mentorship Program could send students to government conventions

The Select Committee on Student Needs is hoping city council will fund a new program that’ll give students an in-depth look at different levels of government.

The proposed Student Mentorship Program gives interested students the chance to travel with Mayor and Council to three annual conventions. One student would tag along to the North Central Local Government Association meeting and meet with other local communities, another to the Union of BC Municipalities convention and hear from MLA’s, and a third would learn about national policies and programs at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities convention.

Not only does this bridge a gap between students and local government, Councillor Jillian Merrick says this could benefit the city long term.

“We don’t always get the youth perspective on the policies and programs that we’re developing and this would be a great way of putting a keen, interested student in direct contact with Mayor and Council as we learn about different programs and policies that are happening nationally,” she says.

Council will consider the $6,000 needed during this week’s budget talks.

Students 19 and older are eligible. City administration is currently creating the application process.
