ICBC warns northern drivers to stay alert this long weekend

ICBC is warning drivers heading out this long weekend to be prepared and stay awake.
They call the August Long weekend the worst for fatigue-related crashes in BC, though north central roads see the lowest number of accidents, with 28 injuries in 110 crashes over this long weekend.
Road Safety Manager Jill Blacklock says it’s due mostly to our lower population number.
“It’s is still important for people in the north to know that they need to take precautions at this time of year,” she says. “It gets very hot, road trips tend to be a little bit longer, perhaps longer distances between communities when you’re out driving around.”
Blacklock advises you “Just plan ahead and make sure you don’t come fatigued when you’re behind the wheel.”
Some warning signs she says you might notice include driving an inconsistent speed, not noticing a vehicle until it passes you, or the obvious one – yawning and daydreaming behind the wheel.
