The jobless rate in Prince George inched up, this year.
According to Statistics Canada, the unemployment rate in the area was reported at 5.5% July 2014, up from 4.5% the year previous.
Analyst Vincent Ferrao says the unemployment rate’s increase was not due to job losses, as more people were working in the area this year than last.
“What did happen though is that the number of people coming in to the labour force, looking for work, also increased, so this bumped the unemployment rate up a little bit,” he says.
“I would like to point out that it’s not a statistically significant change,” Farrow adds. “You need a bigger change than that to be significant.”
He says the number means more when compared to broader figures, like the provincial jobless rate, recorded at 6.1% in July from 6.6%, while the national rate dropped one-tenth of a point to 7%.
