Houston and Burns Lake face evacuations due to fire

The communities of Houston and Burns Lake are anxious as a wildfire threatens an estimated 200 homes.
The communities had a meeting Thursday night with fire officials. District Chair Bill Miller says the fire has grown rapidly to over 4,000 hectares, according to the Northwest Fire Centre.
“They had a very aggressive plan, they thought they had 24 hours and they were going to go around the clock, try to put in some significant protection to the north / north-east area, where they expect the fire to run and direct it away from the population,” Miller explains.
Evacuation orders and alerts are in place for the area due to the China Nose Fire.
Highway 16 is also closed westbound at Burns Lake, though a gravel-road detour is available.
