Wildfires within Prince George Fire Centre down dramatically so far in 2017

It remains a quiet fire season for the Prince George Fire Centre as we head into mid-June.

Fire Information Officer Amanda Reynolds says it’s been a lot less stressful than last year. “Since April 1st, we’ve had 51 fires burning 757 hectares which is significantly less than 2016 where at this time we had 140 fires burning over 90,000 hectares. “

Reynolds adds it’s tough to predict a fire season long-term, but June rains tend to have a big effect later in the fire season.

With that being said, the centre has seen five new fires since last Thursday. “The largest of those fires is the Darby Lake wildfire, which is located north west of Eskers Park – it’s now 100% contained and crews are currently patrolling the fire,” says Reynolds.

She adds all five of these fires are 100% contained.
