The City of Prince George is collecting feedback on pets in the City as it looks to update its animal control bylaws.
Manager of Bylaw Services Fred Crittenden says the current laws have been on the books for over a decade.
“There are some issues we have from the enforcement side that we thought could be dealt with more effectively in a new or an updated by law and provide more emphasis on making owners responsible for their pets action.”
Crittenden says they’re hoping residents will weigh in on a variety of topics. One of the questions on the survey deals with dangerous dogs.
“How they are identified, how they are managed, as well as dogs that may not be deemed too dangerous but at least aggressive, whether or not there is some appetite in the community to deal with cats. Our bylaw really doesn’t deal with the enforcement side of cats being a nuisance to neighbours.”
There’s also a question about breed restrictions.
“Some of the first questions related to whether or not people feel that a dog should be restricted based on its appearance rather than its behaviour. Breed specific legislation – there’s arguments on both sides.”
The survey is available on the city’s website.
“We’ll also be attending some of the off-leash areas from time to time with paper copies of the survey. We also have plans to make some paper copies available at some of the vet clinics, places animal owners would normally go, to gather that feedback.”
Feedback will be collected until July 14. Crittenden hopes to have a report before council sometime this fall.
