John Horgan and Andrew Weaver had some harsh words for Premier Christy Clark during a news conference in Victoria this morning.
“What we’re concerned about is that the Liberals are making mischief with their delays and distractions rather than facing the people and having a change in government,” Horgan said. “How we proceed from there will be hard work – we’re conscious of that – but we’re excited about the prospect, and you know what? So are British Columbians.”
Weaver went even further while addressing Clark’s supposed instruction of Liberal MLAs to refuse to serve as Speaker of the House.
“It is not for her to say ‘This is my speaker.’ It is for the MLAs to elect from within. If she has instructed her MLAs that they must submit a piece of paper or resign, frankly that is a constitutional crisis because it is undercutting the actual whole essence of what the role of the speaker is.
Selecting the speaker was identified as the first priority when the legislature resumes on June 22. The Speaker is usually a member of the government, which, in this case, would mean a Liberal.
Horgan described Clark as “partisan down to her boots.” He says Liberal foot-dragging is holding the province back and urged a quick progression toward a confidence vote that will likely see the Liberals become the Official Opposition in the House.
“It’s outrageous that they’re clinging onto power, rather than actually going to the legislature and having a confidence vote quickly.”
The two party leaders also said rumours that there are already rifts within their caucuses are untrue.
