Stream to Sea program staying in BC classrooms

Stream to Sea, a program where BC students raise salmon fry in their classrooms, has gotten a reprieve from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).
The federal ministry announced that it was defunding the program last month.
Cariboo-Prince George MP Todd Doherty voiced opposition to several cuts proposed by the DFO. He released a video on his Twitter feed this morning.

“A huge win today –  a huge win for our communities that wrote to us and wrote to the ministers and wrote to MPs right across Canada to let them know the importance of the Stream to Sea program.”
Stream to Sea has been around for more than 40 years. 27 classrooms around northern BC are participating this year.
“A massive thank you to our MP Todd Doherty – I cannot thank him enough for his work on this file,” said Steve Hamilton of the Spruce City Wildlife Association. “When I asked if he would sponsor the formal petition, he did not hesitate.”
While the details of the reversal are still to come, Doherty says the feds have committed to returning funding to the Stream to Sea and Salmon Enhancement programs, as well as reversing cuts to the Coast Guard.
