Highway 20 washed out, one car pulled from river

UPDATE – 9:25 AM

RCMP North District Media Relations Officer Corporal Madonna Saunderson has confirmed the person pulled from the river was the driver and the only person in the vehicle.

Officers and emergency services don’t suspect any other cars or people have been swept away but will continue searching until their absolutely positive.

ORIGINAL STORY – 8:28 AM

Williams Lake RCMP is reporting a washout along Highway 20 near Alexis Creek has swept at least one car off the road into the river.

Just after 3 AM Monday, the Williams Lake RCMP was called of rushing water pushing a car off the road. Police, BC Ambulance, and a Search & Rescue helicopter are all in the area about a half kilometer west of the Sheep Creek Bridge.

Emergency services have safely pulled one person from the river, but police aren’t sure if there are more people or cars unaccounted for.

RCMP believe the washout is about 150 meters and has confirmed the road is “completely washed out.”

Police ask that you stay away from the area and Highway 20 altogether.
