First Nations Health Authority will celebrate National Aboriginal Day across BC

BC’s First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) will be celebrating national aboriginal day this week with literally dozens of events across the province.

“It’s an opportunity for First Nations and aboriginal people to celebrate their active spirit and wellness as a collective movement,” says Nicole Cross, regional director for the FNHA’s Northern Region. “There’s 160 events throughout the province and 35 events that are taking place throughout the North, starting on June 21st.”

Five of those events will be taking place in Prince George.

Cross says the programming is being created by local First Nations groups and will feature a wide variety of activities.

“There’s different things, such as cultural safety workshops, totem pole raising, canoe races, community feasts, sweat lodges, crafts, hoop dancing, storytelling, traditional games…there is a real array of different activities to join in on.”

Cross says some events are geared toward engaging health care professionals while others are community celebrations.

While some might be a bit surprised that a health authority is celebrating cultural events, Cross says it’s an important part of FHNA’s mission.

“We definitely want to move towards supporting health through wellness and our communities have been very strong in letting us know just how important our culture and traditional healing is moving forward towards having healthy communities. Really honouring our identity and celebrating our culture and our history is an important step in being well.”
