The next time you’re in Forests for the World, you can check out a new pit house that was unveiled today. The traditional First Nations building was shown off to the public, after students at UNBC and local high schools built it over the summer. One of the students, Cecil Jael, says it took them about a month to complete the project. He says getting the support logs in was one of the hardest parts.
“We didn’t put all the logs up for the walls yet,” says Jael, “we were halfway up and sort of put them in through a hole.”
Jael says working on the house shows how hard it was for Aboriginals in the past to build these houses. The pit house was built in the Dakelh style, and is a traditional winter dwelling used by indigenous people.
