Devils outlast the Stylers in Prince George Senior Lacrosse

The Westwood Pub Devils outscored the Co-op Petroleum Stylers 11-7 on Tuesday night from Kin 1 in Prince George Senior Lacrosse.

Dylan Long and Monty Jones led the way with four points each for the Devils who were finally able to field a full lineup.

“It’s good to have our key guys and our other guys going on with them and get reps so they know what’s going when it comes to playoffs so it becomes a bit of a sixth sense when going out onto the floor,” says Long.

The Devils wrap up the regular season in second place at (10-5) and will face off against the high-flying Quesnel Crossfire (8-6) in two weeks time. “It kind of sucks that we are going to have to travel for a couple of games but that’s the way it goes. Quesnel has a good team this year and I think our guys can match up to the test for sure,” says Long.

Long reflects on what could have been an event better slate of games had it not been for some short lineups and suspensions. “With the season it is kind of hard sometimes when you don’t get the guys out and you know some of those games could have been won, but sometimes second place going into the playoffs is better because you don’t go in a little cocky. I like our chances for sure.”

The season has been extra special for the 25-year old who is playing with his younger brother and former Cariboo Cougar Darian Long. “It’s one of my favourite years to be playing lacrosse to be honest, it is the first time I have had the chance to play with a sibling in any sport because he is so much younger than me. It is the highlight of the season for sure,” says Long.

The Stylers seemed to be in an uphill battle all night long trailing by an 8-1 margin at one point in the contest.

Forward Douglas Porter says the team’s approach to the game was the difference. “We came out here with the mindset that this game doesn’t mean a lot and just try and calm it down and work towards what we’re going to do in the playoffs but I guess the Devils had a different understanding of the game.”

The 18-year old says his team will need to make some adjustments if they hope to make noise in the playoffs. “I think our transition needs to get a bit better, the d-men need to change a bit faster when we get the ball when the 30 shot clock gets down and on offense we need to set it up and slow it down by using the full clock. I think we should be able to do it.”

Porter registered five points in defeat for the Stylers.

The final game of the regular season is on Wednesday when Quesnel tackles the Northland Nissan Assault at 8pm from Kin 1.
