CDC daycare shutting down, allocating resources to other facilities

A local facility will be closing its doors on daycare at the end of the year due to financial problems.

The Child Development Centre (CDC) on Strathcona Avenue is falling short of meeting high demand.

Board of Directors Vice-President Gary Russell says the program has been losing money for a number of years.

“The province has spent $1.5 million to subsidize daycare and preschool spaces over the last few years. The money was not applicable to us because it was targeted to subsidize the creation of new childcare spaces.”

Russell admits it’s been a tough ordeal.

“Our therapy and supported child development programs need the money more for those kids and we also believe that there are some very good programs in Prince George that will fill the void for them.”

He says resources will be allocated to those programs to provide effective therapy for children in need.
