Warning issued after increase in motorcycle thefts in June

June was a bad month to be a motorcycle owner in the city.

The Prince George RCMP has issued a warning after a string of thefts throughout the month. Twelve bikes of various types were stolen last month while only five were reported stolen between January 1 and the end of may.

Most of the bikes stolen were dirt bikes and they were taken from parking lots, back yards, carports and driveways. The RCMP say some were locked, others were not. They have provided a list of affected vehicles, including outstanding bikes:

Police are strongly urging motorcycle owners to take precautions to help keep their bikes from being taken. They’re also asking the public to keep an eye out and report any suspicious activity and have compiled a list of tips for owners:

  • Store out of sight of thieves.  Out of sight is out of mind;
  • Keep it locked even inside a storage locker, shed or a garage;
  • Record serial number, make, model, colour and any special identifying parts/marks.  Keep the record safe at home or in a safety deposit box with other serial numbers of valuables;
  • Use theft protection devices when leaving the motorcycle in a public place.  Use high quality locks of case-hardened steel, as poor quality locks can be cut in seconds. It is important to secure it to an immovable object; and
  • Report promptly any theft of bicycle to local police.
