Local driver cautions commuters to stay home during wildfires

The wildfires continue to burn in BC as the State of Emergency is still in effect.

Highway 97 has re-opened in a few areas of the Cariboo region, but most drivers are being advised by Drive BC to choose alternate routes.

The re-routing is likely to cause traffic jams in most areas along Highway 16, the only free-way commuters in the North can use to get to the Lower Mainland via Valemount and Kamloops.

Local professional truck driver Adam Besse advises the public to be extra prepared.

“It all depends on what Mother Nature does for the fires, and when you’re traveling, if you are, make sure you pack extra water, extra food, and their pets are tagged with a phone number. There’s already enough chaos going on in our province.”

Besse believes if you’re planning on travelling, it may not be worth the risk of causing more congestion.

“Personally, with my job, I don’t have a choice because it’s a major detour. Either way, there’s going to be a lot of truck traffic on that side for sure.”
