Cariboo livestock gets helping hand from Prince George

The Cariboo wildfires are bringing out the good in a lot of people, including a group in Prince George who are rescuing livestock on their own dime.

Volunteers coordinate by the Prince George Horse Society are driving down to the Williams Lake with supplies and driving back up with animals.

It is a 6 hour round trip when you factor in the need to bypass Highway 97 at Kersley.

“We just had a lady that she just headed it off again she has the 6 horse stock trailers it came in from Alberta,” says Curt Wallach with the Society. “She brought all that down and she’s making her second trip down to Williams Lake as we speak and she’s already brought six horses back yesterday.”

Wallach says all people have to do if they want their livestock moved to the safety of Prince George is to get their animals to the Stampede Grounds in Williams Lake. He says they’re well supplied with hay and water buckets, thanks to donations from Home Depot and Princess Auto, but there is a way you can help out.

“Fuel cards would be great. Rather than just fuel because, first off, we don’t have a lot of spots to store fuel and secondly, a fuel card get you either diesel or gas.”

Initially, Wallach says his team was going to need permits to be able to drive the highway south but that requirement has since been waived.
