Fire suppression course at CNC this weekend

The College of New Caledonia’s Continuing Education department has developed S100 Basic Fire Suppression & Safety Training Course and will be offering it this weekend in Prince George.

“There was a real urgency to building this course for this upcoming weekend,” says Alison Anderson, Acting Director of Community & Continuing Education. “One of CNC’s strengths is our ability to create relevant programs that meet our communities’ needs. Our strong partnerships with community agencies and instructors enabled us to work quickly and pull this together.”

The 14 hour, BC Forest Service course covers the basic knowledge of wildland fire suppression, wildfire behaviour and safety procedures. Students who complete the course will be able to effectively and safely respond with basic firefighting techniques used in BC.

Another course – S185 Fire Avoidance and Entrapment – will also be covered during the session. It will help students develop the skills to be able to assess and evaluate potential fire entrapment situations and how to act accordingly, learn to remove themselves safely from a potentially risky situation and deploy the necessary resources using safe and efficient strategies and tactics to prevent loss of life.

There are no prerequisites to take the course, and CNC says costs are being kept to a minimum. Students will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Five people have already signed up for the course which runs 10 am – 6 pm on Friday and 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday. A wait list will also be created for any overflow.

To register, you can contact CNC’s Continuing Education Registration department at 250-561-5801 or email [email protected]
