City opens volunteer coordination centre as evacuees continue to arrive

Prince George is now hosting about 5,000 people evacuated from across the province.

City staff and volunteers have been working tirelessly to provide accommodations.

“Crews basically spent the night setting up that extra portion in the soccer field section of the Sports Center and that should be plenty for now because that has room for roughly 460 extra beds,” says Mike Kellett, Senior Communications Officer with the City of Prince George.

PGSS has set up 180 beds but the school has not been engaged as a hosting spot yet.

About 4,000 adults and 1,000 children have registered at the emergency response centre at CNC. Some are staying in the gym there, others have been put up at the Northern Sport Centre already for a total of 428.

About half the evacuees have found alternative accommodation, many staying with residents. An additional 470 are in RV parking and 484 are staying in hotels around the city.

The Volunteer PG Centre opened its doors this morning, offering those wishing to lend a helping hand a place to go.

“It’s in Room 205 of the Prince George Conference and Civic Center. We’ve posted an online form that’s on our website and there’s a number to call at 250-614-7835,” Kellett says.

The volunteer centre will help the City recruit, train, schedule and deploy its volunteers.
