Prince George housing starts climb slightly in June

We are past the halfway point of 2017 and just 97 housing starts have been recorded in Prince George according to the Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation.

The year-to-date numbers are a far cry from the same point in 2016 where 181 new housing starts broke ground.

A large apartment complex broke ground in the city last April and is the main reason for the major fluctuation this year.

Cities like Kamloops and Vernon also suffered the same fate. “Kamloops has 186 housing starts relative to 233 and Vernon has 146 starts so far in 2017 compared to 191 in the same period last year.” says Taylor Pardy, senior market analyst.

On the flip side, the number of PG start-ups last month saw a slight increase when compared to June of 2016 Pardy says.

“Construction activity in Prince George was up in June with 18 housing starts for the month compared with 14 in the same month last year and if we break this down by market segments, the single detached side there were 15 starts and on the multi-unit side there were 3.”

In BC, the total number of starts have reached 18,572 so far in 2017.
