Williams Lake residents not given all clear yet to return home

It’s not the news that Williams Lake residents, evacuated from their homes last Sunday, wanted to hear.

Mayor Walt Cobb spoke with us this morning.

“It’s not today, it’s not going to happen today for sure. But we kind of knew that anyway but they’ve got some, believe or not, the fire that we’re concerned about has got some containment on it, not a lot, some places 5 and some places 15 percent. They’re getting a handle on it anyway and hopefully later today we’ll get the report and see where we go from there.”

On a positive note, the Mayor says a lot of the pieces that need to be in place before people can return are coming together.

He says the hospital or at least the emergency room is supposed to open today at Cariboo Memorial Hospital and the grocery stores will have at least the basics in place soon as well.

The White Lake wildfire, about 7 kilometres north of Williams Lake, is 8,107 hectares in size.
