Almost three years after a fire devastated the Victoria Towers building in Prince George, a total turn around has occurred at the building. 91 new affordable housing units were officially opened today at the building on 20th Avenue. Prince George-Cariboo MP Dick Harris says the federal and provincial governments put up $1.5 million to update the building.
“Its a part of the federal government’s vision for affordable housing,” says Harris, “we’ve got a number of different programs, that we provide money from the federal level that is pretty much always in partnership with the provinces and municipalities and affordable housing is a need in Canada and this is one of our programs.”
The provincial government bought the building for $11 million. About a third of the suites in the building have tenants living in them.
