At the beginning of August, the BC government explained it was looking to re-establish the Human Rights Commission and now they’re asking for the public’s help.
Attorney General David Eby and Parliamentary Secretary for Sport and Multiculturalism Ravi Kahlon announced on Wednesday a series of dialogues will be created between MLAs, individuals, and groups for recommendations and input.
The NDP states they’d like to develop a modern, efficient, and effective Commission with these in-person meetings, as well as through an on-line platform.
“Discrimination and intolerance have no place in our province. Our government is re-establishing a Human Rights Commission to proactively address issues that act as barriers to a free and just society.” explains Eby. “Through this engagement, we invite British Columbians to share their priorities with government so we can reinstate a Human Rights Commission that advocates effectively on behalf of those who need it most.”
From Sept. 20 through Nov. 17, 2017, British Columbians are encouraged to share their experiences and ideas on how a human rights commission can promote and protect the principles of dignity and equality in the province.
The public will be able to be engaged through a dedicated website where there will be weekly discussion questions to drive the conversation forward and allow residents of BC to submit written thoughts and opinions.
Kahlon will hold meetings throughout the province with various organizations and interested parties as well.
“I am looking forward to hearing from British Columbians about their experiences, challenges and ideas regarding human rights in our province.” Kahlon says. “Our government is determined to build a new commission that addresses today’s issues in modern and effective ways that can truly make progress against systemic discrimination and inequalities in B.C.”
