Prince George Mayor, almost 2,000 delegates attending UBCM Convention this week

Close to 2,000 delegates from across British Columbia are expected to attend the 114th annual Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Convention.

UBCM is holding this year’s edition of the event in Vancouver.

Lyn Hall, Prince George Mayor

Lyn Hall, Prince George Mayor, will be going and will lead a couple presentations as well.

“I’m there with [Colin Basran], the Mayor of Kelowna, and Al Richmond, [Cariboo Regional District Chair], and we’re going to talk about the evacuation process as a result of the wildfires and what it meant to our communities and the province.” says Hall.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to have a conversation about what took place, what we did to handle the evacuees, and to hear about other experiences…” Hall explains. “We are also really interested in talking to the provincial government and saying ‘we handled this evacuation crisis extremely well and if you’re looking at putting together a group to fine-tune those processes, we want to be part of that.'”

The wildfires aren’t the only thing on the agenda as cannabis legalization and funding for local governments, among others, are also on tap for the convention.

There are also scheduled addresses which include:

  • Honourable John Horgan, Premier of BC
  • Dr. Andrew Weaver, BC Green Part Leader
  • Rich Coleman, MLA and Interim Leader of the Official Oppostion

Murry Krause, UBCM President and PG Councillor, will preside over the convention, bringing his one-year term to a close.

A new president will be elected and announced on the last day of the convention.
