National Forest Week: Celebrating the roots of BC

September 24-30 marks National Forest Week (NFW) in Canada. In British Columbia, it’s all the more significant.

NFW is a reminder to British Columbians to reflect on and learn about the importance of forests to the history, communities, and economy of the province.

“National Forest Week provides BC families with opportunities to learn more about our forests.” says Bill Bourgeois, executive director of the National Forest Week BC Coalition. “Whether it’s a walk in the woods, a talk in the classroom, or a showcase of the critters that live in the forest, adults and children alike can see how registered forest professionals are managing BC’s forests for a wide range of uses including recreation, wildlife habitat, timber harvesting, and other values of importance to British Columbians.”

Canada is an international leader in forest certification with BC contributing the most out of any province.

NFW events happen in communities across BC but are more prominent in the North.

“The ones in the North definitely have a greater interest because of that’s the livelihood as well as the recreational opportunities.” explains Bourgeois.
