Duchess Park over-capacity a concern for parents, students

While being at, or over, capacity in Prince George schools sounds like a big step forward, parents of one high school are not happy.

The Duchess Park Secondary Parents Advisory Council (PAC) is concerned over the increased enrollment, claiming safety issues and hard effects on educational needs.

Co-Chair of the committee Sarah Holland says dialogue needs to be created to address the situation and hopes SD57 understands nearly 1,100 students don’t want to stand in a crowded hallway.

“What we’re starting to see is kids having difficulty finding appropriate classes because there aren’t spaces. I know that school was busy looking and saying, ‘Okay, well we’ve got this room here, what kind of classes could we put in that room?’, which is really interesting when you’re trying to complete a schedule.”

She believes students shouldn’t have to double up on lockers or take a class in the library where it’s generally supposed to be quiet.

Holland adds, however, the irony of an enrollment increase is downsizing to meet those needs.

“We know the education is going to be good no matter which school there in, but it is disruptive if you have to move students. So, if we look at it early enough, then perhaps we can funnel off kids who would have been going to Duchess Park; we can put them to another school before they enroll in a less disruptive manner.”

Right now, plans to have the PAC collectively meet with the SD57 board of education is already scheduled for the new year.
