City of Prince George and unionized workers agree to new contract

The City of Prince George and its unionized workers of CUPE Local 1048 and 399 ratified a new four-year contract.

The agreement was approved by council at last week’s council meeting.

“The new contract has wage increases of 2% in the first year 1.5% in the second and third years and 1.75% in the fourth year,” said Sandra Caffrey, manager of labour relations.

She adds it’s a relief to get the deal done, despite the fact it was a lengthy process. “The parties have been bargaining since January,  we did have some gaps in being able to get together. We managed to reach a contract without the assistance of a mediator and without a strike which is always good and was an amicable process.”

“There was a change in the spokesperson for the union because one fellow moved to another position, so that took some time to transition to a new spokesperson – it just takes time,” added Caffrey.

The term of the agreement is retroactive to January 1 and runs until December 31, 2020.
