Connaught Motor Inn remains in limbo

The stalemate between the City of Prince George and the property owners of the much-maligned Connaught Motor Inn continues.

In May of 2016, the city pulled the business license of the hotel due to crime and security issues.

The building also posed a health risk to workers through mould and asbestos according to WorkSafe BC.

Bylaw Services Manager, Fred Crittenden says the city still has not received a business plan from the owners. “I mean they obviously have an option to upgrade it but they may be seeking other interested parties on the property, I’m not sure. They’ve got all kinds of options as property owners as any property owner does.”

The Inn has to fulfil 15 city council conditions before it can re-open to the public, however, none of them has been met up to this point.

“A security system including cameras that can monitor the common areas of the property and many of the conditions centre around health and safety issues related to the structure with all health and safety regulations brought up to code,” added Crittenden.

Despite the building not receiving any attention from the property owners, the city is still keeping an eye on the hotel even though they are still in no position to take over the property.

“We continue to monitor the property as far as unsightliness if there are any indications that all the windows are broken out, the building starts to collapse – those are things that qualify us stepping in and ask council for further action as far as remedial action.”

According to the Prince George RCMP, service calls to that area has declined by 67%.
