Blazers stun the Cougars to complete weekend sweep

The Kamloops Blazers arrived at the CN Centre 0-9.

They left 2-9, following a pair of convincing 4-1 victories over the Prince George Cougars.

On Saturday night before 2,874 fans, the Blazers broke open a 1-1 tie by scoring two goals late in the second period just 15 seconds apart, at 19:42 and 19:57.

“They were a desperate hockey team. They outplayed us for two games. They played harder; they wanted it more than we did,” said Cougars Assistant Head Coach Shawn Chambers on 94.3 the GOAT’s post-game show.

The game was tied 1-1 after one as Luc Smith of Kamloops and Dennis Cholowski of PG exchanged goals.

Blazers captain Nick Chyzowski notched the winner, Ondrej Vala added an insurance goal, and Connor Zary, in the 3rd period, rounded out the scoring.

Kamloops out shot Prince George 34-18, including 21-5 over the last 40 minutes.

Dylan Ferguson picked up the win in net for a second straight night while 16-year-old Taylor Gauthier suffered the loss to see his record drop to 1-3.

“Credit to them, they were really hungry. They came out to play. I think Friday night we got frustrated. Everyone tried to over compensate for each other,” said Jared Bethune of the Cougars, who had his six-game assist streak come to an end.

The Cougars are 3-5-2 at the 10-game mark, including 1-4-2 on home ice.

They play their next seven on the road starting Friday in Edmonton and won’t have another home game until November 10th against Everett.
