Francophone District Short 50 Teachers

The Teacher shortage in BC is hitting the Francophone district the hardest.

The French school are short about 50 teachers causing ongoing disruptions for both instructors and students.

Teacher Joanne Hapke says the Prince George area hasn’t been hit as hard as other areas, but it’s still a major issue.

“I do know that we had one of our french immersion schools, a kindergarten class room that was being run by the learning assistance teacher, and they just hired in a kindergarten teacher on October 15th.”

It’s harder to get french teachers in their schools says Hapke.

“You actually need french immersion, you have to be able to speak fluently in french and so your’e drawing from a small number of teachers who can do that.”

BCTF President Glen Hansman said in a statement that the government needs to do more about this issure

BCTF’S President Glen Hansman has been calling on the government for months about the issue and said more needs to be done to develop robust recruitment and retention strategy.
