The UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team went punch for punch against the Calgary Dinos for 40 minutes.
Unfortunately, it still wasn’t quite enough as the T-Wolves fell 85-75 dropping to 0-2 in the process.
UNBC jumped out to a 19-5 lead early in the first quarter, only to see it evaporate as they trailed 44-41 at halftime.
The Timberwolves got into foul trouble, which ended up being the team’s undoing as Vaggelis Loukas, Marcus Mackay, James Agyeman and Vova Pluzhnikov all committed four fouls or more.
“Those things hurt us for sure in the first half as we had to sit some guys but at the end of the day Calgary is a tough squad, they have been to the final four year in and year out. For us to battle this weekend gives us a lot of positives, it would have been nice to get one but it didn’t go our way,” says Todd Jordan, UNBC Head Coach.
Pluzhnikov led UNBC with 17 points in the loss.
He says it was good to give a better account of himself after a slow start the night prior.

“Last night I got into foul trouble and I just had more energy tonight, I wanted to bring a lot more to our team and felt very comfortable.”
Mambi Diawara led the Dinos in scoring putting a steady 25-point effort after dominating on Friday with a 38-point performance.
UNBC travels to Langley next weekend when they faceoff against Trinity Western.
In women’s action, the Timberwolves fell to the Dinos by a score of 81-58 despite jumping out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter.
Brianna Ghali and Erin McIntosh both led Calgary with 16 points each, while Maria Mongomo recorded a game-high 19 points in a losing cause for UNBC.
The T-Wolves drop to 0-2 and also visit Trinity Western next weekend.
The playoff drive also ended the for UNBC’s men soccer team as they fell 3-0 to the defending national-champion Alberta Golden Bears.
