‘Big Poppy’ signs in the KHL

It did not take long for sniper Nikita Popugaev to find another team.

The six-foot-six former Prince George Cougar, signed a two-year contract with CSKA Moscow of the KHL.

Popugaev, who will turn 19 years old on November 20th, had two goals and five assists in 13 games with the Cougars this season, but also recorded a team worst minus-13.

The Cougars announced on Thursday that Popugaev, a fourth-round pick of the New Jersey Devils in the 2017 NHL Draft, left the club for “personal reasons.”

Prince George acquired “Big Poppy” from the Moose Jaw Warriors in January in return forwards Justin Almeida, Yan Khomenko, a second round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft and a fifth round pick in this year’s Draft.
