Prince George resident reaches centennial birthday

It’s a special day for Charlie Butler as he turns 100 today.

The Prince George resident’s birthday was celebrated at the Chateau and featured lunch, a couple speeches, and even Happy Birthday.

Charlie was born in Queens Pond, Newfoundland, in 1917, before the province was a part of Canada.

He joined the British Navy and as his close friend, Lee Ongman, explains, had some memorable experiences.

“He was once torpedoed off the coast of Africa and lucky for the boys in the ship that swam to the lifeboats, they had two Newfoundlanders that could get them to shore.”

After being discharged, Charlie decided to travel west and ultimately chose to settle in B.C. with his late wife, Alice.

Now, Charlie lives at the Chateau as one of the first residents to find a home there.

“I feel ok, I have no complaints,” he says.

“I’m satisfied.”

The secret to his long and healthy life, Charlie says, is cod liver oil.
