The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) has voted a unanimous “Yes” to increasing the tipping fee on garbage collection at the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill.

This means users will be paying three extra dollars per tonne starting January 1st, 2018 bringing the total of $85.

Chair of the Environment and Parks committee, and re-elected RDFFG Vice-President, Terry Burgess says that’s an increase of only three-and-a-half percent.

“That would be on loads, demolition waste, and all that kind of stuff that goes into the landfill. It’s also on city garbage trucks; they’re all weighed and when it goes through, the tipping fee is charged on that garbage that is in the truck.”

He adds the increase is a way to keep up with the demand from homeowners.

“As a homeowner myself, I generate less than 25 kilograms of garbage every two weeks and that represents about 35 cents a month increase on your utility bill that would cover that fee.”

However, residents in rural and remote areas of the district will not see this increase as they pay the fee through taxation.

RDFFG also voted ‘yes’ to alter the year-round operating hours of the Foothills landfill, which will now be 7AM to 5PM starting July 1st, 2018.

Decisions was made in a board of directors meeting on Thursday, where RDFFG Chair Art Kaehn was also re-elected to his position.
