City receives $1.8 million grant-in-lieu from province

Prince George has received its provincial grant-in-lieu to help support government owned facilities.

The City is receiving more than $1.8 million from the Ministry of Citizens’ Services to offset those property taxes.

“The grant-in-lieu amount that we receive each year is based on the government’s provincially-owned buildings throughout our municipality,” explains Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall.

He adds the courthouse is the main building within the City benefitting from the boost.

“The money itself fluctuates depending on the assessment and the assessed value, so I wouldn’t say it’s a surprise because we receive the grant-in-lieu every year and so it can fluctuate.”

Prince George is one of 54 total communities in BC who receive this funding every November via the Ministry of Citizens’ Services.

The City also receives the third highest amount behind Victoria ($3.5 million) and Vancouver ($2 million).
