Business owners who drop off cardboard at the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill will have to watch their loads starting January 1st, 2018.
The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) has decided to reduce the amount of acceptable cardboard to 10%, while doubling the surcharge.
In a statement, Waste Diversion Program Leader Laura Zapotichny says since July 1st, only 22 loads were charged extra at the landfill out of more than 2,800.
“When it comes to getting rid of cardboard, we want to encourage the business community to look at other options for disposal. Businesses can arrange to rent cardboard bins and have their cardboard taken to a recycler. Smaller businesses who may not be able to afford that can take small loads to cardboard to a number of collection points in Prince George.”
The RDFFG adds this move is to minimize the amount of recyclable materials in order to extend the landfill’s life.
Previously, the landfill accepted cardboard loads 25% or less among the waste.
